Example 3

easy
Triangle PQRโˆผPQR \sim Triangle STUSTU. PQ=4PQ = 4, ST=6ST = 6, QR=7QR = 7. Find TUTU.

Solution

  1. 1
    Scale factor: k=STPQ=64=1.5k = \dfrac{ST}{PQ} = \dfrac{6}{4} = 1.5.
  2. 2
    TUTU corresponds to QRQR: TU=7ร—1.5=10.5TU = 7 \times 1.5 = 10.5.

Answer

TU=10.5TU = 10.5
In similar triangles, corresponding sides are proportional by the same scale factor. Once kk is established from one pair of corresponding sides, multiply any side of the smaller triangle by kk to get the matching side of the larger one.
