Example 3

hard
Two parallel plates are separated by 0.02ย m0.02 \text{ m} with a potential difference of 100ย V100 \text{ V}. What is the electric field between the plates?

Solution

  1. 1
    For parallel plates, the field is uniform: E=VdE = \frac{V}{d}.
  2. 2
    E=1000.02=5000ย V/mE = \frac{100}{0.02} = 5000 \text{ V/m}

Answer

E=5000ย V/mE = 5000 \text{ V/m}
Between parallel plates, the electric field is uniform and equals the voltage divided by the plate separation. This setup is used in capacitors and particle accelerators.

About Electric Field

A region around a charged object where other charges experience a force. Measured in newtons per coulomb (N/C) or volts per meter (V/m).
