Inverse Variation Math Example 3

Follow the full solution, then compare it with the other examples linked below.

Example 3

medium
If \(y = k/x\) and \(y = 12\) when \(x = 5\), find \(y\) when \(x = 15\).

Solution

  1. 1
    \(k = xy = 12 \times 5 = 60\).
  2. 2
    \(y = 60/15 = 4\).

Answer

\(y = 4\)
\(k = 60\); as \(x\) triples (5β†’15), \(y\) becomes one-third (12β†’4).

About Inverse Variation
