Example 4

easy
Morning temperatures for five days are 12, 13, 12, 14, and 25. What is the range, and what does the day with 25 tell you about the data?

Solution

  1. 1
    Step 1: Maximum = 25 and minimum = 12, so the range is 25โˆ’12=1325 - 12 = 13.
  2. 2
Step 2: The 25 is much higher than the other values, so it makes the spread larger and stands out from the rest of the data.

Answer

The range is 1313, and the 25 is an unusually high value that increases the spread.
Range is sensitive to extreme values because it only uses the largest and smallest data points. One unusually large or small value can change the range a lot.

About Range

The range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a data set, giving the simplest measure of overall spread. It tells you the total span of the data from lowest to highest in a single number.
