Example 4

medium
A 9 V9 \text{ V} battery transfers 450 J450 \text{ J} of energy to a circuit. How much charge has passed through the battery?

Solution

  1. 1
    Voltage is energy per unit charge: V=EQV = \frac{E}{Q}, so Q=EVQ = \frac{E}{V}.
  2. 2
    Q=4509=50 CQ = \frac{450}{9} = 50 \text{ C}

Answer

Q=50 CQ = 50 \text{ C}
Voltage tells you how much energy each coulomb of charge receives (or loses). A 9 V9 \text{ V} battery gives 9 J9 \text{ J} to every coulomb that passes through it.

About Voltage

The difference in electric potential energy per unit charge between two points. Measured in volts (V).
