Example 4

medium
The data set {3,5,5,7,8,x}\{3, 5, 5, 7, 8, x\} has mean 5.55.5 and mode 55. Find xx.

Solution

  1. 1
    A mean of 5.55.5 for 66 values gives a total of 6ร—5.5=336 \times 5.5 = 33.
  2. 2
    The known values add to 3+5+5+7+8=283 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 8 = 28.
  3. 3
    So x=33โˆ’28=5x = 33 - 28 = 5. Then 55 appears three times, making it the mode.

Answer

x=5x = 5
Using the mean gives the missing value, and then the frequency check confirms the mode. This connects two measures of central tendency in one problem.

About Mode
