Example 4

medium
A bicycle wheel has diameter 7070 cm. How far does it travel in 2020 complete rotations? Use ฯ€=227\pi = \frac{22}{7}.

Solution

  1. 1
    Find the circumference of one rotation: C=ฯ€d=227ร—70=220C = \pi d = \frac{22}{7} \times 70 = 220 cm.
  2. 2
    Multiply by the number of rotations: 220ร—20=4400220 \times 20 = 4400 cm.
  3. 3
    Convert to metres: 44004400 cm =44= 44 m.

Answer

44ย m44 \text{ m}
Each complete rotation moves the wheel forward by exactly one circumference. Repeated-rotation problems are a direct application of the circumference formula.
